Sierra Navada Endurance Run & Relay

Race Information

INFORMATION FOR THE SIERRA NEVADA ENDURANCE RUN

Enclosed, please find the information packet for the 2008 Sierra Nevada
Endurance Run. The run will be held on September 27, 2008 at 6:00 a.m., starting
at the Cavitt School in Granite Bay, California. If you have participated at the
SNER in previous years, you will notice several significant changes this year.
They are as follows:

1. The race will start at the school, thus eliminating the 2/5 mile walk to the
starting line used in previous years.

2. The race will be held in conjunction with the Rio Del Lago 100 Mile Run, thus
you will also be running with participants in that event.

3. So as to eliminate confusion with cutoff times at several of the aid stations,
the overall cutoff time has been increased from 13 hours, 45 minutes to 15 hours.
The cutoff times at the aid stations have also been increased (see Mileage &
Checkpoint Chart).

4. In previous years, a runner would need five consecutive finishes to be
eligible for a five year buckle and ten consecutive finishes for a ten year finish.
The requirement for the five year buckle remains the same; however, the finishes
for the ten year buckle do not have to be consecutive. Runners participating in
the Rio Del Lago 100, can use this event towards a five or ten year buckle.

I. COURSE AND TRAIL DESCRIPTION

1. The race will be held in conjunction with the Rio Del Lago 100 Mile Run.
Runners will follow the identical course along the equestrian trails paralleling
the American River, in a northeasterly direction. They will climb to the Auburn
Dam Overlook and then proceed to the turnaround point at No Hands Bridge. They
will proceed along the identical route back to the starting point at Cavitt School.
This distance is 53.36 miles and there is approximately 10,000 of elevation change
along this stretch. Temperatures can range from the 70's and 80's to possibly 100
degrees so be prepared. It is unlikely that there will be rain. Daylight is
approximately 6:00 a.m.; dusk is approximately 7:00 p.m.

2. The course will be marked with yellow ribbon, yellow surveyor flags, chalk
arrows, direction signs, and glo lights at night.

3. If you have to drop out of the race at a point where your crew is unavailable,
we will make every reasonable effort to get you to the finish, particularly if
you are in need of medical attention. In non-emergency situations, you may have
to wait a while to be evacuated. Our principal responsibility is to put on a race
so please be patient. Aid stations will close when the last runner has been
checked through.

II. PERFORMANCE RULES

1. There will be no unofficial runners. Unofficial runners will receive a
lifetime ban from all future Rio Del Lago Ultrarunning events.

2. Each runner's official race number must be worn prominently on the front of
the body, not on the hat, and must be easily visible at all times.

3. Except in case of medical emergency, runners may accept no aid nor assistance
in any form from anyone, including pacers and crews, between checkpoints.

4. Each runner must carry all of his own food, fluids, clothing, and other
supplies needed for use between checkpoints.

5. Littering of any kind is strictly prohibited. Littering will result in the
immediate disqualification of the runner in this year's race, and for all future
races. No cups, cans, bottles, wrappers, banana peels, orange peels and other
articles may be carried from an aid station. Discarding clothing along the trail
is strictly prohibited.
Please respect the natural beauty of our trails and the right of everyone to
enjoy them. Littering could threaten our future use of the trail.

6. Runners are responsible for the actions of their crews and pacers. A crew
member is defined as an individual who provides material support to a runner in
the event. A pacer is defined as a "trail companion" who may accompany a runner
along designated sections of the trail.

7. Runners, pacers and crews must comply with all Race rules and all regulations
and instructions issued by the Race Director in pre-race memos and the Friday
afternoon pre-race briefing. They must also willingly comply with all parking,
traffic and access instructions on Race Weekend. Failure to do so may result in
disqualification of the runner, among, other sanctions.

8. Participants must follow the marked trail at all times. Any runner departing
from the official trail must return to the point of departure on foot before
continuing.

9. Each runner must be checked IN and OUT of all checkpoints or control stations.
Runners not logged in and out of all checkpoints may not be credited with
officially finishing the Run.

10. All cut-off times established for the various checkpoints will be strictly
enforced. Runners must be checked OUT of the checkpoint by the cut-off time.

11. Any entrant who is unable to finish the Race must personally inform the aid
station captain of the nearest checkpoint of his decision to withdraw. HE MUST
GIVE HIS RACE NUMBER PULL-OFF TAG (issued at the pre-race medical check-in at
Cavitt School) TO THE CAPTAIN AT THAT TIME. The tag serves as official notice of
a runner's withdrawal from the Race. Runners who leave the course without turning
in their tags will be classified as "lost," thereby activating the Placer County
Search and Rescue unit. Time spent searching for any such runner will be billed
to the athlete involved at a minimum rate of $475 per hour.

12. Violation of any rules or directive of the Sierra Nevada Endurance Run may be
grounds for disqualification. Rule violations which are discovered after the
event may result in retroactive disqualification or other sanctions.

13. The purpose of these rules is to ensure the Run's integrity as a test of
individual performance, providing equal conditions for all entrants.

III. PACE RUNNERS

A pace runner is defined as a "trail companion" who may accompany a runner along
designated sections of the trail. Pacers are allowed solely as a safety
consideration for fatigued runners. Absolutely no physi'cal or mechanical aid
may be given by the pacer to assist the runner over difficult sections of the
trail (except in medical emergencies), and no food, fluids or supplies of any
kind may be carried for the runner. Pacers can accompany a runner from the Auburn
Dam Overlook on the return trip.

Pacers should be experienced trail runners in excellent physical shape and
conditioned adequately to run 22.66 miles over rough terrain.
