The First Annual PEACHTREE CITY 50K

Runners from five southeastern states turned out for the First Annual Peachtree
City 50K Fun Run on Sunday, November 10. The event was hosted by the DARKSIDE
Running Club, and was held in ‘honor’ of member Paula May celebrating her 50th
birthday.

The course featured six 4.7 mile loops and a short ‘out and back’ along the
scenic and shaded golf cart paths of Peachtree City. The event provided a few
extras as well, such as two guided (running) tours (one at 7:00 a.m., the other
at 3:00 p.m.) of the course the day before the event. During the race runners
had at their disposal two mobile aid stations (golf carts!), splits and aid at
the start/finish line, and special indicators on the backs of all participants
who knew the course (as well as a lead golf cart for the first lap). The
Huddleston Elementary School gymnasium served as race headquarters
(registration, bag drop, refreshments, awards, results—which were posted for
each runner by the time they entered the gym after they finished). The post-race
refreshments included pizza from Partners, a local favorite. The final touch was
a special ‘black icing’ (Darkside color) birthday cake for Paula, featuring the
message ‘Happy 50K Paula.’

The awards were unique: a scale model golf cart mounted on a wood base with an
engraved plate detailing each runner’s accomplishment. The individual award
winners were:

Male Open – Robert Youngren
Female Open – Kelly Murzynsky
Male Masters – Fred Johnson
Female Masters – Valerie Reynolds

The runners, the volunteers, the course, the scenery, the amenities—all should
serve to make the Peachtree City 50K an ultra favorite in the southeast for many
years to come!

Mark it on your calendars—7:30 a.m. on the second Sunday in November in
beautiful Peachtree City, Georgia. We’ll see you in 2003!
