The fifth running of the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club Fat Ass 50km featured the best weather and the closest finish to date.
Bob Dion of Readsboro, Vt., sped out to the lead and built up a sizable advantage on the field. With two laps (10km) remaining in the race, it seemed like he had a strong chance at a sub-4:00 clocking. But Dion faded over the last two loops and was nearly caught by a hard-charging Tim Stroh of Pittsfield, Mass. Dion held off Stroh by less than a minute and won in 4:05:21. Stroh finished in 4:06:02, a personal-best time by five minutes.
Keith Russell traveled south with fellow Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club members from the Albany area and was the only one in his group to complete all 10 laps. Russell was third in 4:37:07. Co-race director and Clydesdale running star Larry Phillips was fourth in 4:41:31.
Charlie Dermody and his trusty companion Tucker the dog are the only ones to finish all five MHRRC Fat Ass races. They came in together with Fred Kirby at 4:45:20. Kirby has run every Fat Ass except last year, when an ice storm precluded his driving up from New Jersey.
Irv Miller of the host club was once again the oldest finisher in the race. At 61, Miller’s sub-5:00 clocking of 4:56:38 was quite impressive, and less than two minutes off his best time for the distance.
Palash Bosgang of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team completed her first 50km and was the first female finisher. Bosgang, 28, teaches meditation classes at nearby Bard College. She floated through the 10 laps with positive attitude and a constant smile.
Nearly 50 runners and walkers showed up on a sunny and relatively mild winter day with temperatures reaching the mid-40s.
