      Ninety-nine starters, 91 finished the 50 km, 27 did
the 50 mile. Seven did 20 miles. We had nice weather, maybe
a little warmer than many were ready for. This was the
best KUTS weather since KUTS3. Comments about mud seemed
to range from "not bad at all" to "there were places."
There was only one comment about course markings. Noone
got lost, not even Javier. The Friday night buffet saw
nearly all of the runners in attendance. And there were
over 50 door prizes given away. Ugly Morehead State
University hats, MSU socks, MSU apparell (sp), mag
subscriptions, UR posters, Americana CrossRoads CDs,
a MSPR t (to Hugh), and the coveted Sheltowee Turtle.
This was the third turtle, and it seemed ironic that
Norm Yarger would win, since his wife had gotten the
first one two years ago.
To have started as a NUTS (Non-competetive Ultra
Trail Series) event (low-key) KUTS has grown somewhat
past that. But the essence of a fun run still pervades
this event, even if a few try to make it competitive.
This may have been the best KUTS yet. But each
one has been unique. We overcame clearing the trails
from the ice storm a few weeks ago, which might have
caused cancelling the run, to the flooding and having to
re-route a section, to a few other problems of keeping
up with communications of where each runners was. The
cell phones WERE BUSY. We were able to keep track of
all of the runners, and other logistical things easily
for a change. And it went smoothly for the volunteers.
This year I put an addition on the entry form
asking for volunteers. Duane Frichtl, Pete Schuler,
and Tracy Miller were out there the entire time helping.
And there were Sharlyn Izurieta, Debbie Russo's two,
Dawn (Nikki's friend), John Sanders, and I expect I'm
missing others. All friends of the runners working with
a few locals to make everything work this year. And there
were volunteers from the Red Cross that Bob Grueninger
recruited. And then my friends. Dave Daniels, Fred Howes,
Bob Bylund, Phil Martin, Tom Carew, Ed Scott, the Gullett
brothers, and a cadre of others who just came by saying
they were there to help. A successful run doesn't happen
without these people. And I was blessed to have so many
helping.
It's been a long few days. Little sleep, scampering
all over the place. Laughing, smiling, worrying, doing,
and it's winding down. Post run tomorrow, but I don't
have to get up at 3:40. This was a fantastic wonderful
weekend.

Redneck Wisdom For The Day:
When you go through the buffet line,
there is no rule that you can't
        have the peach cobbler first.
