I want to start this race report with the part that is often left for the
last paragraph, which most people never read because they only skim the first
part, the results, and then move along to something else. That's the part
where we thank the volunteers. Marty Coleman, Sally Brooking, Steve Brady and
Jim O'Leary counted us as we went round and round the mulberry bush. After
completing her planned loops, Teri Dove also joined in on the calculations.
The aid station was expertly manned by Joey Terry, son of runner Beth Terry.
Those 5 people made this run happen.

The course was a 1.5738636364 mile (8310 ft) loop at Roswell Area Park. It's
a very busy public park with various trails, soccer fields and tennis courts.
The surface was mostly packed dirt, with some asphalt and the much loved
concrete thrown in for added pleasure. Some thought the course was too hilly.
Some thought it too flat. Some found it to be just right. Almost all were
surprised to find out just how hard packed dirt can be. Mostly shaded, though
not completely.

On the application, I had asked for favorite aid station food. I was not
joking. With only a few exceptions (my lobster and caviar supplier cancelled
at the last minute), most items were there. Your basic sweet and salty
stuff, plus pumpkin pie and sweet tea (it's a southern thing).

Richard Schick's portable mini-weather station showed that the run lived up
to it's name: 86 in the shade with a heat index in the 90's by the time we
finished at 2:00 pm. Twenty-four lost souls participated in the event. There
were no winners, as this was only a fun/training run, but Mark Henderson
covered the most miles with 28 loops for 44.07 miles.

Amy Bookspan completed 16 loops for 25.18 miles in the allotted 6 hours.
After the clock had stopped, she made another loop (her 17th for 26.76 miles)
with me removing the course markings, thereby completing her first marathon.
While not 'official', in our eyes it's just as special.

Post run, we found our way to Larry and Robbie Robbins' house. Upon arrival,
everyone was offered showers, which was their way of saying "Y'all stink!"
Once the overall stench was greatly reduced (we thought HazMat would be
needed), we were graciously treated to BBQ chicken and all the fixin's, in
addition to a wide variety of cold fermented beverages. Many tall tales were
told and new friends made as the hours passed by.

I’ll definitely put on this event again next year. I told several people that
the plan was to turn this into an official race, complete with runner numbers
and sponsors. But then I thought, "Why ruin a good thing?"
