Heartland 100 Course Profile

The Heartland 100 is scheduled for October 14, 2000 and consists of a 50
mile out and back course through a remote section of the Flint Hills of
Kansas. Much of the course meanders through open range with stunning views
of the vast expanse of the tall grass prairie. The race is run almost
entirely on backcountry gravel roads with only a short section of pavement
at the start/finish. With only 6,000 feet of climb and rolling hills the
course should provide runners the opportunity for fast times. The 30 hour
time limit will also provide runners of all abilities with the opportunity
to finish a 100 mile race. There will be 17 aid stations (4 unmanned) with
easy crew access at 10 locations. Crew vehicles will utilize separate roads
and will not be allowed on the course used for the race.

The openness of the prairie will present challenges which are uniquely
different from most of the other 100 mile races. The race starts and
finishes in the very small town of Cassoday, which is located 45 miles
northeast of Wichita and 145 miles southwest of Kansas City, with easy
access off I-35.
