Harold Tucker 50K Beach Run 2001 Results
Cocoa Beach, FL Jan. 7, 2001 1. Matt Mahoney, 45, Melbourne FL 5:11:30 2. Phil Little, 58, Orlando FL 5:15:34 3. Jerry Miller, 59, Boca Raton FL 6:06:23 2 x 25K relay 1. Matt Mahoney and Joan Mahoney, 63 7:32:12 Race director, Bruce Bayliss The race is named in honor of long time Space Coast Runners member and former race director, Harold Tucker, who died Dec. 24 of leukemia at 83. Because of the beach renourishment project, the course was rerouted to loops on a 10 mile section of beach through Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral up to the jetty. Beach conditions ranged from soft and sloping to hard and flat. The tempreatures were 40 to 70 F with sun and low humidity. I tried to run the race barefoot as Harold Tucker used to do, but after 23 miles my feet were getting tender (especially on the harder sand), and I put on beach slippers. Phil Little, who ran 22 marathons in the last year, and once ran this course in 4:04, made me work hard for the win. I really wanted to walk the last few miles, but every time I did he would come up from behind and make me work harder. --, matmahoney@yahoo.com,(data from Matt Mahoneyhttp://www.he.net/~mmahoney/ub/)
