82 starters, 38 finishers under 48 hours
The run started in the rain, which returned off and on throughout the
two days. There was some hail and several runners (including myself,
John Demorest and Chip Lee) were chased off Handies by lightning. No
life threatening injuries, but second place finisher Dave Horton (who
was also under the old course record) ended up with a broken finger
from an encounter with a loose boulder on Grant-Swamp Pass. It was a
tough race up front, with Ricky Denesik, Dave Horton, Randy Isler,
Kirk Apt, Scott Mills, Joe Clapper, and Gi Schneider all being within
striking distance of the lead through most of the run. Ulli Kamm,
Gordon Hardman, and Kirk Apt took home special awards for achieving
five Hardrock finishes (Ulli in '97), and Charlie Thorn received a
special award for his service as course marking director and for
housing countless itinerant Hardrock runners at his Silverton
house "Charlie's Bunk 'n Run".
Matt Mahoney went through the Kamm Traverse aid station (12.2 miles
to go) with plenty of time, but got lost in the darkness over Putnam
divide. Somewhere in the dark he met up with Fred Vance, who was
also lost (I assume), and they finally finished in 51+ hours,
unfortunately busting the 48 hour limit. I'm sure Fred and Matt
will have more to tell us about this. 70 year old Carl Yates
missed the cutoff at Kamm Traverse. We all enjoyed resting
on the log sections he kindly left along the trail between there
and the finish, cleared from the trail with a chainsaw he packed
up on his back a week or so before the run. Too bad he didn't get
to use them. Joel Zucker is now 3 for 3 at Hardrock, which is
particularly remarkable since this year's finish is by the largest
margin yet - a whole 23 minutes!
