Naeem Ravat 14:04:00 My dreams of a fifty mile trail run in the LBJ National Grasslands came true when number 318 crossed the finish line in the dark . Three years of race directing effort paid off joyously in a sweaty hug from finisher Mike Langille in his first 50 mile completion. Mike wasn't fast and he wasn't last, but he is to me the heart of the experience we call trail running. It's about the effort. The gift is the great outdoors and the rest is hard work. Wise County Texas dished up another gorgeous race day after record rainfall in the month of March and two years of draught conditions. Our third annual event finally lived up to previous dire warnings of mud holes. We promise real trail conditions and deliver with miles of well marked rolling course through Oaks, Pines and Prairie punctuated by 20 aid stations. The 50 mile event covers four different color coded loops from the start finish area at TADRA point. Entrants and their families camped at TADRA and basked in the sun post race watching the 10 and 25 mile finishers cross the line. 50 mile runners were cheered on to each of their loops with aid station cuisine including SUCCEED! electrolytes, homemade cookies, brownies and birthday cakes. Tyler Curiel celebrated his birthday with 7:48:10 first place in the Grasslands 50 mile race and was presented a cake half way to his victory. Mud did slow the pace for some, but those who avoided the mud puddles were rewarded with saw briar slashes. Linda Muscil must have kept her powder dry as she battled for the women's win with newcomer Tammi Starnes. Only two minutes apart at 25 miles, Linda fired off a winning volley the second half to reach a new women's course record in 8:54:40. We share the pleasure of trail running at the Grasslands by including 10 and 25 mile races during our 50 mile premier event. This encourages new trail runners and walkers to join the growing numbers in our sport. When I rode a horse in the LBJ National Grasslands four years ago and marveled at the trail devoid of runners, the race idea was hatched. One of the first runners to try the trail was beginner Mike Langille. He was not up to running 10 or 25 miles yet, but worked as our Aid Station Capt. in the inaugural Grasslands Run. As the event evolved, so did Mike's trail running and his training trips to the Grasslands. The pleasure of seeing Mike Langille accomplish his goal of completing a 50 mile trail race makes race directing worth the effort. Plan to join us in the Grasslands March of 2002.
