Bill Moyle 7:06:03 Scott Weber, Race Organizer and Director-Frosty Trail Races The 1999 Frosty Trail Races-Colorado 106 Racers gathered at Chatfield State park in Suburban Denver to run "Frosty's Annual Birthday Run" also know as "The Frosty Trail Races". Frosty is a 9 year old Australian Shepherd who proudly OWNS Theresa Daus-Weber and myself, Scott Weber, the race organizer and director. Frosty the dog was pleased with the turnout and was happy to frequently test the aid station food (especially the cookies) to insure that it was indeed tasty enough for the runners. He also helped the families and crew of the runners to maintain muscle looseness and mental readiness by encouraging them to play tennis ball with him while waiting for their runner to complete a loop. 39 of the 106 runners were entered in the 50 km; the remainder were in either the 25 km or the 12.5 km. All events started together and the site of 106 runners streaming down the course was both colorful and inspiring. Above them were a half dozen hot air balloons that traditionally use Chatfield State Park as a Saturday launch site. The weather was fantastic. Cool at the start, yet almost summerlike by the race's completion. The course was in excellent shape. The wide dirt path that routes the runners over 9.5 km of each 12.5 km loop was dry, smooth and fast. The meadow and forest section of 3 km per loop was mostly dry and fast, but was punctuated with occasional patches of crusty snow and slow-to-die ice, as well as some of my signature mud and puddles that I scout for while designing and marking the course. Boulder Running Company generously sponsored the event by providing $500 of running gear and gift certificates to raffle off. I decided to conduct the raffle at the pre-race meeting versus doing so after the event. The runners enjoyed this pre-race excitement that was made possible by brothers John and Andre Raveling, owners of the Boulder Running Company in Littleton. You might remember their father, John Raveling, who ran sub-6 hour 50-milers at Chatfield State Park in the 1980's! A special thanks goes to the volunteers who worked throughout the day to aid and assist the runners. Several runners also kicked in to help with the volunteer duties both before and after their event. Thank you for going that extra mile! The next event on the SSI schedule is the "Alferd Packer Trail Races" on Saturday, March 13, 1999. Distances include a trail half-marathon, a marathon and a double marathon.
