Larry Robbins, GA Did Not Start
A brief synopsis for now--full details to be assembled,
and, hopefully, made at least partially coherent sometime
in the next few weeks, for any who are interested.
Unfortunately, most of the field DNFed.
Of five actual starters, one arrived to the finish line of the
second one-hundred miles.
The weather was absolutely beautiful through the first
36 hours. Torrential rain and high winds
(estimated 30-40 mph) blew in by 11 PM Friday, about
41 hours after the run began. After a few hours,
the rain became a gentle sprinkle. Then the skies
once again cleared before dawn, and moon light preceded
the sunrise. Saturday was mostly sunny, with a gentle breeze.
The heavy rain during the second night drastically altered trail conditions,
at a time when extensive areas of mud, slippery roots and rocks, and
the psychological impact of the weather were most likely to adversely
affect the runners who remained out.
Thanks to all the volunteers and crew!! These people were, literally
the runners' lifelines!
