The 7th running of the Catoctin 50k Trail Run (Frederick, Maryland USA) was
held on Saturday August 11 (105 starters and 90 finishers). Race conditions
varied on this hilly, rocky and demanding course. The out bound was hot and
incredibly humid and by the time they reached the turn around point the
majority of runners were tired and ragged. The inbound offered rain showers
which cooled down the vast majority of the runners. The rain then submerged
most of the trail causing navigation over rocks to become even more tricky
and difficult.
In the end, Harry Bruell of Harpers Ferry West Virginia, was victorious in a
time of 5:09:00. Sue Johnston of Waterford VT won the women's race (6th
overall) in a time of 6:04:29. Both times incredibly fast when only about
25 percent of the field broke 7 hours. Most runners suffered a 30 to 90
minute slow down over their previous year time.
A more detailed report to follow shortly.
