Hi all-
I had a great weekend out in Cornhusker country. I took part in Lou Joline's
extravaganza, the 42.5 mile Brew to Brew, Kansas City Missouri to Lawrence
Kansas. There were 34 men and I think four women in the solo run, and
anotherwhole bunch running it as a relay team, with each entry having the
option of as few as two or as many as ten members. This made for plenty of
company most of the way, despite the disparate starting times for various
categories. KCer Raoul Flores (a Leadville 24-hour buckler from last year,
I believe, as well as a Grand Slammer) won the men's race as has become his
habit, and Gwen Heist for the women.
The event is also run with an age handicap, and the adjustment benefitted
me as much as anyone, but I would've had to have been Methuselah himself to
pose any threat to Raoul.
The course became a lot more interesting to me once it crossed the bridge
from the city pavements and got on the levee beside the river, then out to the
dirt roads and corn fields of the farm country.. There are a few railroad
crossings where you may get unlucky and be forced to wait out one of the
mile-long freight trains hauling their interminable coal cars. The race
instructions state that you're allowed to time these stops on Scout's honor
and include the total in your final time. I wonder if anyone has ever actually
submitted this? .. have to ask Lou next year.. but it suggests some interesting
and humorous scenarios.
We got lucky with the weather, too, because rain had been forecast, but held
off until most of the field was inside the finish at the Free State Brewery
downing the suds and the wonderful post race eats served up by Lou in his
green-striped Dr. Seuss hat. Good time for all.
