An unseasonably warm day (highs of 75-76F, about 12F above normal)
greeted runners in the second New Mexico MTN RNR event of the year. This
is especially tough as there are long stretches of totally exposed high
desert running. The course was made a bit more pleasant by the thousands
of blooming yellow poppies which generally appear only every couple of
years.

Dave Dixson of Santa Fe had his usual strong run (he seems to appear
at most of the 20+ MTN RNR events each year). Chasing him towards the end
was Durango, Colorado sensation Emily Loman. I can honestly say that when
she went by me at about 16 miles on a very sandy and dusty jeep road she
"left me in her dust." Watch out for Emily at longer runs later in the
year.

Canada's travelling ultra ambassador Rolly Portelance stopped by for
this run in between Rocky Raccoon and a Tucson ultra in a week. Rolly has
run about 140 ultras all over North America besides directing many top
notch Ontario ultras for many years. The deluxe motor home that he and
his wife Pauline travel in was a welcome relief from the bright sun for
some of us after the run.

Although lately every event I organize seems to take more and more
out of me (I was staggering and imagining camels and zebras were in a
field alongside the trail by 25 miles), it is ALWAYS rewarding to have
such nice, friendly and interesting runners join me on my local trails and
roads. Thank you to all of you.
